Our History

A number of years ago the United Methodist North Alabama Conference purchased six acres of land on Danville Road here in Decatur, Alabama on which to build a new church.  Decatur's growth was moving south in the direction of Danville Road and a new church was needed in this area.  In the winter of 1987 the Rev. Jim Bailey submitted to Conference Headquarters a proposal detailing plans and budget needs.  At the Conference in June, 1987, the Rev. Bobby Ray Halbrooks was appointed as the first pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church.
Forty-two persons were present at the first meeting of the new congregation on June 14, 1987 in the Chapel of Wesley Acres Methodist Home for the Aging.  After three weeks the congregation moved to the Kid's Stuff Day Care Center.  On September 11, 1988 the congregation moved into the building at 3014 Danville Road S.W.

The new St. Luke United Methodist Church was chartered December 6, 1987, with sixty members and has continued to grow and expand.
God continues to richly bless St. Luke United Methodist Church!
